City Information:

Lynchburg is a scenic city located in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia. The area has an extensive history beginning in the 1760’s when Quaker John Lynch created a ferry across the James River. The city of Lynchburg was founded in 1786 as “Lynch’s Ferry.” During the Civil War, Lynchburg served primarily as a supply and hospital center, and was spared most of the destruction that befell other Virginia cities and towns. Lynchburg did see battle action, however, in June of 1864, when Confederate forces successfully fought off a Union attack.

Today the city has an urban population of over 96,000, including the suburbs of Madison Heights, Timberlake and Forest. The 1990 census by the U.S. Census Bureau lists the Metropolitan Statistical Area of Lynchburg (which includes Amherst, Bedford and Campbell counties and the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg) as having a population of 193,928.

Lynchburg's economy is based on the many high-tech manufacturing companies located here including cellular communications, nuclear energy, and machinery. This manufacturing and research orientation represents a shift from the mill-based economy of the past, which included foundries, shoes and textiles. Education is well-represented here with four area private colleges and a public community college. Health care includes two hospitals, one of which, Lynchburg General, has been recently renovated into a state-of-the-art facility for the next century.

Lynchburg City Schools serve nearly 9,000 students in grades K-12 with 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools and two high schools. Technology is infused in all curricula levels. The school system offers advanced placement courses, gifted enrichment programs at all grade levels, exceptional career-technical and technology education programs and internationally recognized music and theatre programs including free Suzuki violin instruction at all grade levels. Both high schools consistently take top honors in regional athletic, academic, and state competitions and have National Merit Scholar achieving students.
